First couple days, arriving in Strasbourg

So, second day in Europe. Yesterday we took the train (had to change in Karlsruhe, I think) to Strasbourg, which is formerly part of Germany, but is now French.

Luckily the AirBnB that we booked allowed us to check in early. Eric had been feeling sick that morning - felt like throwing up we we went slow, and the kids carried his bags, as there was about a 30 minute walk to the apartment. We actually had to find 2 places, the first was a laundrymat where we could pick up the keys via an automated system. Then the actual place. It's a three story apartment with very steep steps, ones that you're best off going downstairs backwards on. It looks almost brand new, and didn't have any reviews yet on AirBnB, so maybe we're one of the first renters.

Trying to eat low carb/carnivore here is challenging but so far, pretty doable. We've been to 2 grocery stores so far, the ReWe at the Frankfurt Airport, and the Auchan not too far from our apartment. Some of what I've bought have been butter, cheese, sliced meats, ground beef (made into hamburger patties, VERY low fat which is not what I'm looking for), eggs, uncooked bacon bits (lardon) which I used to make bacon and eggs, greek yogurt. Also they sell pre-cooked eggs, hard boiled - they're the colored ones.
So, I'm not starving. I wonder how it'll be on the boat. They did ask for information on whatever dietary restrictions I have, so we'll see. I will find out tomorrow!

The big activity of the afternoon was buying some bikes for Peter and I. We will need bikes when we continue to bike on the Rhine, after the boat tour ends in Mainz. I found a highly recommended repair and used bike shop here, and bought 2 bikes for us. I'm not sure if these are as good as the ones that we got last year for the Loire, but we won't have to return them, so that's one hassle avoided.

Strasbourg is a beautiful old city, chock full of medieval half-timbered houses. People are very chic and elegant, frequently. Lots of cafe-culture, people that are out and about having coffee and drinks at the cafes around here.

We ended up at an art gallery this evening just next to our AirBnB. It was "modern art" in the standard sense - take a look at this:

Here's a few more photos. Peter at the Frankfurt Airport train station (first picture after landing)

About to get on the tourist boat, swans and a German school group

Looks like old church statues are being stored here, in an old covered bridge.
